My day job is in disability support and I see the effects of poverty and the threat of homelessness almost every day. There are people in our community going hungry and I can't stand it anymore. You would think that in 2025 we'd have this figured out by now but no, apparently not.
I don't know the causes of these problems and I don't care. All I know is that there are a lot of people doing it tough right now and we can help them, one ukulele at a time. I'm not going to raise prices to cover this, we are keeping them at RRP or lower.
I'm not sure how we'll get the money to those in need. I would like to find a small non-profit to handle it rather than something like the Red Cross where your money just gets thrown down a black hole, only emerging when some fat cat executive needs to be paid. I'd also like it if the non-profit makes direct cash grants to people who really need it.
At the end of the month, I'll post scans of receipts and proof that the money was given away.
If you guys know any good organisations that meet the criteria above, let me know at rich@ukulelewarehouse.com.
I will look into this and post here in the blog about it as I learn more.
